Let’s Get Organized!

17 Feb

Happy Sunday morning readers!

It’s been another very hectic weekend for me. After Valentine’s Day I’ve been moving from one thing to the next to the next. I’m so grateful to have a couple hours of pure downtime before I head into work today at 1. I’m going to take this time to whip out my brand spankin new planner and get organized!

Now, something you should know about me – I love school supplies. My first friend at AU, Allison, bonded over the idea of highlighters and the Staples store with me almost immediately – obviously we were meant to be friends. I was on the hunt for “THE” planner, for those of you who get jazzed about this kinda thing you know what I mean, and luckily a fellow AEPhi pointed us in the right direction. Mine arrived last night!IMG_2415 IMG_2416 IMG_2417 IMG_2422AND IT IS PERFECT AND BEAUTIFUL! Okay, again, if you love office supplies, you understand. I just love the attention to detail, even the box it ships in has an inspirational quotation on it! When I opened it up, it even held goodies for me! A sample pack of labels with my name on it! Meant for gifts, envelopes, etc. I also got  a coupon that NEVER EXPIRES, how often does that happen?!? for my next order from them. Seriously, she’s the bomb.com. Thanks Erin Condren!IMG_2421 IMG_2420Once I opened it up, I knew I definitely definitely made the right choice. She places the month calendar before it’s broken into weeks, an essential in all of my planners, has inspirational quotations up the whazoo, a folder in the back with a place keeper that snaps onto the spiral, I really could go on and on so I’ll spare you all the details and just show you 🙂 IMG_2423 IMG_2426 IMG_2427 IMG_2429So it definitely is safe to say that I am one happy girl 🙂

Some may ask – so what does this planner have anything to do with “healthy eating?” My answer, everything. Lately I have been having so many things to think about from work. Events to plan, tasks to complete, exercise classes to work into my schedule and I have been having a really hard time keeping up and making sure things are getting done on time – because my notes are all over the place. It’s hard for me to remember due dates when they’re scribbled onto pieces of paper scattered throughout a notebook and google cal, it’s really not for me. I’m “old fashioned” that way.

With all these dates and tasks floating around in my head, it’s hard for me to plan ahead and see which days are my busiest. Thus, healthy meal planning has been becoming very difficult for me to stay on top of. I know I could be doing a way better job, and I’m currently fresh out of groceries – except for breakfast foods, so I’ve been winging in the past couple of days because I can’t physically see when the best time for me to go grocery shopping and plan would be. Alas, that won’t be a problem anymore thanks to my planner! I’m so excited to get everything in order and have it all in one place. It calms me so much and makes me look forward to the things I have to do more, versus dread remembering them and stressing about getting it done. You should enjoy things you do, get excited about it. I’m very happy to report this planner will help me do just that! 🙂

Quick recap of the last couple days:

Valentine’s Day. You guys saw how sweet Kevin was that morning and that evening he took me out for sushi! Yum! We went to Yazamato in Alexandria and it did not disappoint. Yellowtail nigiri, Alaskan roll, Godzilla roll (blew my mind) and a Super Dragon roll.IMG_2348 IMG_2349 IMG_2351 IMG_2354We also ordered Green Tea which they filtered through rice and spices! The miso soup was devine 🙂 Definitely my new favorite restaurant for sushi!IMG_2339 IMG_2340 IMG_2341 IMG_2346Kevin’s Senior Night
This weekend has also been super special because it was Kevin’s last college dual meet of his career. He went out in true style by pinning his opponent in a career-fastest time! So proud of everything you have accomplished Kevin. Let’s kill it at EIWA’s again this year! NCAA’s, here you come.IMG_2397 IMG_2404 IMG_2411 IMG_2413Yup! That’s Kevin’s dad. He flew here all the way from Washington state to be here for this weekend. We picked him up from the airport Friday after my shift and have been having a total blast since he got here. Bowling last night to celebrate was definitely a highlight of my weekend. I really like his dad so I definitely always enjoy getting to spend time with him.

Well readers, I’m off to organize and get ready for my busy Saturday. After I jot a few things down I’m hoping to get outside for a quick 3 mile run because I start my half-marathon training this week! Be on the look out for that!

Until next time,

Pilates, Hot Yoga, and Barre Oh My!

Good morning readers!

What a crazy week this has been. I know I said that about last weekend, but seriously … this week kicked things up a big notch. Since there is SO much to discuss, I’m going to do my best to do a quick recap with only the highlights.

Let’s start off with Tuesday!

I woke up around 630 for a 730AM work meeting at lululemon. While I ate a delicious batch of overnight oats,Imagewe went over a bunch of topics, but my favorite was discussing the events we are a part of for the upcoming months.  I offered up the idea of doing a 5k as a team! Now I’m “owning it,” company lingo 🙂 , and am setting it up for all of us to do next month! Woo!

After the meeting, I went to Equinox gym for my first Pilates class with Morgan and Carlene. I didn’t really know what to expect, but this class was definitely challenging whenever it came to my quads/hamstrings. Those bad boys are super tight.ImageAfter class, I met up with my roommate Autumn for lunch in our dining hall where I had a random mixture of fresh salads and enjoyed a piece of apple pie with vanilla ice cream.ImageBlurry.Horrible.Picture.

I then had to rush back to work for a meeting with Kelly and ended up staying until 630 to help out because someone couldn’t make it to their shift. I then swung home, picked up Erika, and we made whole wheat garlic bread, whole wheat pasta carbonara and sauteed vegetables while we watched The Perks of Being a (Wall)Flower! (Erika called it “The Perks of Being a Flower” on accident which had us cracking up. It was exactly what I needed after a super long day. I’m so happy to have met Erika and become close with her.ImageImageImage

Alarm was set for 515AM and I was up and at ’em for a hot yoga class at 6AM with my coworker Clare at Dancing Mind Yoga. I have been there once before and this class we took was with the same instructor, Alex. She knows how to push you and both times I have come out of her class totally rejuvenated – and incredibly sweaty.

Post class was breakfast and a meeting for me to learn more about the depth of the company, which was shared over bagels and “bite breaks.”ImageI couldn’t resist and got the Cinnamon Crunch bagel from Panera. If any of you have ever had this bagel, you will understand.

Instead, for lunch I had another batch of overnight oats and my shift flew by! I totally loved every second of work.ImageI pretty much passed out for the remainder of the day, except for catching up on Pretty Little Liars.

Aka Valentine’s day! My day was off to a super sweet start because I woke up to a series of presents from the one and only Kevin Tao.ImageImageI decided to dive right in and have a cookie for breakfast. Sometimes that is just what the doctor ordered.

I got ready around 11 and went to Georgetown to meet up with Laura, a girl I knew in college who works for lululemon too, for my first Barre class! I first swung into lululemon and bought the Scuba hoodie I had been wanting for over a week! We ran out of it in my size at our store, but it was a Valentine’s Day present to myself – especially due to it’s color scheme 🙂ImageNext was Barre3. The studio was gorgeous. I was completely blown away. It’s by the waterfront and is in the second oldest building in DC, George Washington used it to store his tobacco. They had 2 rooms for the classes, a gorgeous lobby and a locker room.ImageImageImageWe took the class with the owner of the studio, Jill. Not only was she really personable, but she spoke to us the whole time to make sure we were doing each movement correctly, came around and made personal adjustments by moving your body, and even had us laughing at certain points. I’m not the kind of person to take breaks during a class, but in this class my quads and abs felt like they were going to shred if I didn’t. It was an amazing workout that I highly recommend.ImageShe even took our picture for us after class as we discussed clean eating 🙂 (she’s awesome). Laura and I also realized we were opposite color coordinated since we both work black and mint from lululemon.

All 3 of the instructors were excellent at talking you through each movement, always making sure you were elongating your spine, tucking your tailbone, or giving you clear instructions for whichever move you were working on. However, only Alex and Jill moved around the class and adjusted my body.

I know that makes some people feel uncomfortable, but for me that is the sign of a good instructor. It means they have an eye for paying attention to the smallest details, that they are constantly looking around the class making sure no one is at risk of injury and want you to maximize the effectiveness of each movement. They can notice when my hips need to be more parallel to the floor despite 20 other bodies around me.

I was so grateful to be able to go to all of these classes this week and really work on my core/back strength, along with my posture. I would have to say that Barre 3 was my favorite. If any of you are looking for a new class, I highly reccomend Barre. It’s no joke for sure.

Until next time,

“We’re just having fun and sweating together!”

Good morning readers!

This weekend was super crazy, but was a lot of fun. Working different shifts at lululemon gave me the opportunity to start getting to know everyone a little bit more and become more familiar with our way of doing things.

Woah, talk about crazy. I clocked in some hours at our research lab in the morning and then darted over to lululemon in the afternoon for the closing shift. How did I manage to continue eating healthy with all the craziness of the day? Planning ahead. Since I knew I was going to be running around this weekend I woke up early Saturday to make sure I had plenty of time to make myself breakfast, then pack a healthy lunch and dinner to eat throughout the day.

Eating food on the go or “fast food” typically makes me feel sluggish, more tired, and “off.” If you know what I mean. Since I knew I was going to need a lot of energy, I made sure I had lots of vegetables and complex carbohydrates. What are those you may ask. Well here’s a little breakdown for you 🙂

Simple carbohydrates or simple sugars – These carbs are broken down and digested very quickly, but most simple carbs contain refined sugars and very few essential vitamins and minerals. Examples include table sugar, fruit juice, milk, yogurt, honey, molasses, maple syrup and brown sugar.

Complex carbohydrates – the complex carbs take longer to digest and are packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals. Examples include vegetables, whole grain breads, oatmeal, legumes, brown rice and wheat pasta.

With that in mind, I packed a big salad for lunch – spinach and arugula mix, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, cranberries, yellow bell pepper, and baby bella mushrooms in a light balsamic vinaigrette.IMG_2305I was so glad I had taken the time to pack a lunch and get started on it before I got to lululemon because we were having SUCH a crazy busy day that I was constantly moving until I went on break for dinner. I was actually really pumped for this dinner, which I also ended up eating for lunch on Sunday since it was quick, easy and delicious.IMG_2315Trador Joe’s Butternut Squash Ravioli with sauteed garlic, onion, broccoli and tri-color bell pepper in mariana sauce. HOLY YUM.

Once I got home Saturday night, this girl went straight to bed to re-coop.

For some bizarre reason, I was up and at ’em at 7:34AM. Uhhhh what? I was only falling asleep the night before at 1215AM! Oh well, I spent the morning workin on that tax return, exciting stuff I know, then decided to try out a spin class at my gym. Although I’ve been at my gym since November, I had not ventured into the spinning room until yesterday morning. I didn’t really know what to expect, the last spinning class I took was freshman year of college at our school’s gym, but was excited to see what all the ranting and raving was about. The room had a cool biker theme to it complete with a disco ball on the ceiling to make it fun.IMG_2049Since I was new to the class, I hopped on on of the LiveStrong bikes in the back row and asked a fellow classmate to help me set up my bike so I was at the right position.IMG_2050Since the instructor came into class right before we started I didn’t get a chance to introduce myself, but she quickly revealed just how personable she was. First and foremost, she impressed me with her tech skills and interest in pop culture. She not only made a playlist of every single Grammy nominee, but she told us what they were nominated for as each song played and read us an interesting tidbit from People magazine all while biking and teaching the class! Crazy! And it kept me engaged with her which made me want to push myself when she asked us to.

As for the class aspect of it, I don’t know about you guys but I have a pretty non existant butt. That being said, riding for an hour on one of those stiff and slim seats did not feel so good. While the class was definitely challenging at times, I wouldn’t say that spinning is for me. I was pretty uncomfortable for a lot of the class, but I did feel better when we started to do “runs,” standing up and pedaling sprints instead of seated sprinting. I am definitely glad I tried it and I even got to learn a lot about some artists I hadn’t even heard of before. I felt that was a really creative and fun way to get everyone involved and keep your mind off of that huge hill you were currently battling.

One thing she said during class really struck me. We were working on an increased tension sprint interval and she noticed some people were having a hard time keeping the pace as the tension increased. She told us to crank it down a little if we needed to and added, “You don’t have to prove anything to anyone, we’re just having fun and sweating together!” I just felt that was a such an incredible attitude to have as an instructor. It made me as a newcomer feel comfortable going at my own pace, I didn’t have to kill myself trying to keep up with everyone. And she’s right, we are there to have fun, we just happen to be sweating while we are 🙂

Once I got home, I ran around to pack a lunch and a second breakfast for work while nomming on some Overnight Oats  I had popped into the fridge the night before:)IMG_2309 This mix had 1/2 a banana, 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk, 1/3 cup non-fat Greek yogurt and was tossed into the almost empty jar of Old-Fashioned Crunchy PB I had.IMG_2312 I drank my smoothie on the way to work (1/2 cup mixed frozen berries, 1/2 banana, 1/3 cup non-fat greek yogurt, and 1/2 cup of OJ – to keep fighting off that cold I just got over) and packed the same ravioli and vegetable mixture I had on Sunday for lunch 🙂

One thing I have noticed about working at lulu these past few days is I am not drinking enough water or eating enough throughout my shifts. I have been getting hunger headaches and feeling dehydrated for a good portion of my shifts. For today’s shift, I’m keeping this in mind during meal prep and am going to make a more calorie dense dinner to eat on break, but also pack more snacks I can grab and munch throughout the evening.

To make my meals more satisfying overtime, I’ll need to add some more sources of whole grains in addition to some more healthy fats. These two components of my meals help keep me satiated overtime, versus only a couple of hours. Especially since I’m constantly moving around at this job versus sitting down I need to make sure I am fueling my body with the right amount of energy it will need to help me do my tasks effectively.

To make sure I’m staying hydrated, I’m simply going to pack a bigger water bottle. As you guys know, I love my clean kanteens, but 20 oz of water just ain’t cutting it for a 7 hour period. No worries though, I’ve got my trusty nalgene I can count on.

Readers, any suggestions on some great calorie dense meals you turn to?

Until next time,
